Most people imagine that taking a dog or a cat from Mexico to the US or Canada would be nice, but must be nearly impossible.

Well, it actually is not complicated at all! You can ask our friends who have already taken their authentic Cozumeleño pet across the border to their homes. (Read our testimonials below, it’s true!)

All you need is a health certificate which our vets can provide -if the animal is healthy of course-and the required vaccines and treatment against parasites can be done at the shelter as well.

Once we have that covered, volunteer Andrea will assist you through the process of registering your pet with the airline and provide you with all the advice needed to fly your pet safely and comfortably. She has assisted many, many animals to their new homes in the US and Canada.

The cost of having an animal fly with you is reasonable, and it ranges between $100 and $250 dollars, depending mostly on the airline. Shipping an animal is an entirely different story; a lot more expensive (last quote we got was $654 dollars) and complicated. This is why we always look for people willing to escort animals to their homes.

Depending on our stock of kennels currently we can lend a kennel for a rescue. We do try very hard to find ways for them to come back. Kennels can be bought on the island, but are very, very expensive and sizes often limited. So,

if you are still planning your trip down and are considering adopting an animal here, then it would be much better to bring a kennel with you.

We are always looking for donated kennels and soft sided carriers to assist with rescues, for those cases in which purchasing the kennel is not an option. If you would like to help animals go to people who want them in either the US or Canada, it will be great help if you donate a kennel. We suggest checking Craig's list in your area, as there are often used kennels for very good prices.  Walmart in the USA also has great kennels for great prices, very light weight and easy to transport. We would deeply appreciate it if you could be so kind to bring us one, or more! We could also assist with the extra baggage charge fee to bring us a kennel, as they are so important for us to have and quite expensive for us locally. We also need kennels to hold animals pre and post op spay and neuter and isolate sick animals in need of treatment.

It is so rewarding when you watch an island dog or cat that had little chances of finding a good home, slide away on the baggage carousel heading to a new life up north. Watching the faces of the people too, knowing that they are making all the difference in these furry guys, is such a warming thing too.
